1982

Tokyo Cement Company (Lanka) PLC was established in 1982 as a joint venture between Japan’s Nippon Coke and Engineering Company (formerly Mitsui Mining Co.) and Sri Lanka’s St. Anthony’s Consolidated, under the visionary leadership of Deshamanya A.Y.S. Gnanam.

1983

Construction of the Tokyo Cement factory at China Bay, Trincomalee commences in 1983. Late industrialist Deshamanya A.Y.S. Gnanam, recognized the inherent potential of Trincomalee as a cement manufacturing hub and launched a modern cement factory in this Eastern port city.

1984

The company starts Cement manufacturing on the 13th of August 1984. Got listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in 1984 as Sri Lanka’s first privately owned cement manufacturer.

1986 – 1988

The factory was shut down for 2 years after a bomb attack on the 26th May 1986, which caused extensive damages to the machinery and plant. After complete rebuilding of the factory, with help from our Japanese partner, we recommenced operations on the 26th of May 1988.

1994

In March 1994, Tokyo Cement became Sri Lanka’s 1st cement manufacturer to receive the prestigious SLS Certification for its Mitsui Cement brand.

1995

Cement manufacturing is disrupted due to continuous power cuts. And as a result, Tokyo Cement explores new avenues to become energy independent. A 3.5 MW diesel generator is used to power the entire cement manufacturing and bagging process in Trincomalee, marking the first step in our endeavour to self-generate electricity required to run operations.

1997

In 1997 Tokyo Cement Company started conducting One-day Training Programmes for Masons from all parts of country, as one of its key Corporate Responsibility Projects aimed at uplifting the Construction Industry.

1998

Capacity at the Tokyo Eastern Cement factory in Trincomalee is increased to 250,000 metric tonnes per annum, with the installation of automated cement grinding facilities in 1998. Expansion of the fully automated cement bagging and packing system, using latest technology from Germany, enables the company to improve production efficiency and guarantee its superior product quality.

1998

Fuji Cement Company (Lanka) Ltd., fully owned subsidiary of Tokyo Cement Co. starts operations with a manufacturing capacity of 35 MT per hour.

1998

On the 14th January 1998, Tokyo Cement becomes the 1st cement company in Sri Lanka to obtain Internationally recognised ISO 9002 Certification for its world-class Quality Management System.
