Tokyo Cement Company (Lanka) PLC was established in 1982, as a joint venture between Japan’s Mitsui Mining Co (Later absorbed by Nippon Coke & Engineering Company) and Sri Lanka’s St. Anthony’s Consolidated, under the visionary leadership of Founder Chairman, late Deshamanya A.Y.S. Gnanam. Listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in 1984 as the first privately owned cement manufacturer, the company has made an indelible mark in transforming the country’s construction industry.
Today, Tokyo Cement Group is the undisputed market leader in manufacturing high quality cement, concrete and cement-based value-added products in Sri Lanka. The company operates the country’s only ISO certified cement and concrete testing lab. Keeping quality at the forefront of operations, Tokyo Cement is the first local company to achieve ISO 14001 Environment Management Systems Certification and the first cement manufacturer to achieve ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems Certification. Our TOKYO SUPER brand of cement comes with “Green Mark” certification for its environment friendly manufacturing process.
A pioneer in every sense of the word, Tokyo Cement lays claim to a number of industry firsts, including the setting–up of Sri Lanka’s first automated cement factory. As a champion of sustainability, we have pledged to do everything in our power to change our country ‘from the concrete jungle, to a greener world’. And keeping this promise, we set forth on a journey made up of many small steps, that take us and our future generations towards a greener, healthier, and sustainable tomorrow. Our Biomass Energy program, which currently has a capacity of 23MW/h of green energy, has made us the single largest contributor of non-hydro renewable energy in Sri Lanka for over the last decade, while reducing our carbon footprint and making us 100% energy independent.
The company strives to enrich our country, its people and the environment by successfully ingraining social welfare and environmental conservation in our corporate DNA. Our keystone environmental initiatives; that are very much a part of what Tokyo Cement Group is, such as our Coral Reef Rehabilitation, Mangrove Reforestation and Forestry Nurseries programs, exemplify our strong belief in conserving those critical parts of the environment in order to sustain our country’s incomparable biodiversity.
