The unique position of our island nation near the equator encircled by vast ocean beds makes us far more vulnerable to the effects of global warming. Even though our CO2 emissions as a single nation is small compared to larger industrial countries, if climate change goes unchecked, our tiny island will experience widespread effects ranging from adverse weather conditions to rising sea levels. Therefore, we as a nation must do what each of us can, to prepare ourselves and mitigate the economic and environmental impact threatening our future.

A key contributor to the increased rate of global warming is the use of fossil fuel, the main source of energy for industrialization. Not only does it harm the environment in the process of acquiring and refining, it is also the main source of CO2 emission to the atmosphere. Having identified the multitude of ill effects, the whole world is rapidly adopting Renewable Energy Sources as an alternative.

Tokyo Cement Company, as the largest manufacturer of cement and concrete in Sri Lanka, made a far-reaching strategic decision to use only Renewable Biomass Energy for our entire local manufacturing process. Our goal was to become energy independent and be the role model for other industrialists.

Today, with a total capacity of 24.6 MW/h, Tokyo Cement Group is the single largest contributor of renewable green energy in the nation.

This is effectively equivalent to eliminating 112,444 Metric Tons of Greenhouse Gasses from being emitted into the atmosphere every year. It is the same as NOT driving 434 million kilometers by car - a distance that circles the earth 10,830 times OR REMOVING 23,752 passenger vehicles from the road annually OR NOT dumping 35,685 Metric Tons of garbage every year.

The concerted efforts of our Renewable Energy Initiative have enabled our entire local production process to be 100% energy independent, while contributing 60,000 MW/h of renewable green electricity annually to the national grid.

We maybe a tiny droplet in a vast ocean. Yet, we are proud of what we have achieved so far as a single player, making a significant impact in the country’s Energy Footprint. We take pride in our hard labour that has paid in leaps and bounds, so that our children can continue to breathe fresh air and enjoy the blessing of lush green flora and abundant fauna of our country. As a company, we will to continue to support Sri Lanka’s growth as a partner in nation building. And by making conservation a part of our corporate way of life, we fulfil our duty to enrich our country, its people and the environment.
